It’s finally here. Our first look at the much anticipated biopic about one of hip-hop and rap’s most influential groups, N.W.A. (or Niggaz With Attitudez). This is the group that had everybody around the world saying “Fuck the police!” and we said it proud. They shined a light on what it meant to grow up in an impoverished urban neighborhood (aka “the hood”). Their stories were specifically from their perspective of kids from Compton, California. A city that, up until that point, nobody really knew about unless you were from any of the surrounding areas. Each unique and powerful voice painted a different yet cohesive image of this West Coast ghetto that has since been immortalized.
The red band movie trailer starts off with Dr Dre and Ice Cube taking a ride through the streets of Compton and reflecting on where they started and how they changed everything. They make sure to stop and say a few words to Kendrick Lamar as he explains what NWA meant to him being a kid from Compton himself. They also make a stop by the barbershop to get some of The Game’s perspective on the legendary rap group and what they meant to him and how they still motivate him to this day. This group didn’t just curse and spout off obscenities. They gave the voiceless a voice, and it was a loud booming voice that could not be ignored.
Once we get a glimpse into how inspirational this young rap group was and is to kids growing up in Compton and West Coast hoods everywhere, the trailer begins. At this point in the preview, if you know NWA, your heart should start beating a little bit faster because it’s about to get live and you know it. There’s no need to explain. I’ll let the preview do that for you. Now say it one time for good measure, “Fuck the police!” P.s. Get a good look at who’s playing a young Ice Cube…
